Overview
Trashigang is the heartland of Eastern Bhutan, a region that feels worlds apart from the more visited western valleys. At just 1,150 meters elevation, the town enjoys a subtropical climate with lush vegetation, terraced rice paddies, and orange orchards. The district is home to various ethnic groups, each with distinct dialects, dress, and traditions. The famous Trashigang Dzong perches dramatically on a clifftop above the Drangme Chhu river, while nearby villages preserve weaving traditions that produce some of Bhutan's finest textiles. For adventurous travelers, Trashigang serves as the gateway to remote tribal communities like Merak and Sakteng, where yak-herding semi-nomads maintain ancient customs. The journey here—whether by road or the dramatic flight to Yonphula—is an adventure in itself.
