Overview
Bumthang, meaning "beautiful field," encompasses four valleys: Chokhor, Tang, Ura, and Chumey. This is Bhutan's religious heartland, where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) first brought Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century and performed miracles that are still commemorated today. The valleys are gentler and broader than western Bhutan, filled with buckwheat fields, apple orchards, and ancient temples. Bumthang has a distinctly different feel—more rural, more traditional, and deeply spiritual. The region is also known for its unique foods: bumthang honey, Swiss-style cheese (introduced by a Swiss development project), and Red Panda beer brewed at Bhutan's first brewery.
Highlights of Bumthang
Top Attractions
Jambay Lhakhang
One of Bhutan's oldest temples, built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. The annual Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival features the famous "naked dance" performed at midnight.
Kurjey Lhakhang
A sacred complex of three temples marking where Guru Rinpoche meditated and left his body imprint (kurjey) in a rock. The site is surrounded by 108 chortens and large cypress trees.
Burning Lake (Mebar Tsho)
A sacred lake where Pema Lingpa discovered hidden treasures (terma) in the 15th century. He dove into the water holding a burning lamp—and emerged with the treasures, lamp still burning.
Tang Valley
The most remote of Bumthang's valleys, with traditional villages, the Ogyen Choling palace museum, and Burning Lake. Excellent for those wanting to experience rural Bhutan.
Red Panda Brewery
Bhutan's first brewery, established with Swiss assistance. Tour the facility and taste the signature Red Panda Weissbier—unexpectedly excellent craft beer in the Himalayas.
Swiss Farm & Cheese Factory
Started in the 1960s by a Swiss cheese-maker, the farm produces excellent cheddar and other cheeses. Try the cheese and local honey at the attached shop.
