Overview
Phobjikha (often called Gangtey after its famous monastery) is a broad, U-shaped glacial valley in central Bhutan, designated as a conservation area. The valley floor is a protected wetland that serves as the winter home for 300-500 endangered black-necked cranes that migrate from the Tibetan Plateau each year. From late October to mid-February, these elegant birds can be seen feeding in the marshy fields—a truly magical sight. Beyond crane season, Phobjikha charms with its sweeping views, traditional wooden farmhouses, gentle hiking trails, and the 17th-century Gangtey Goenpa perched above the valley. The absence of power lines (buried underground to protect the cranes) adds to the timeless atmosphere.

Practical Information

Getting Around
The valley is compact. Walking trails connect key points. Your vehicle handles transport between the valley and monastery area.
Accommodation
Several excellent lodges with valley views (Dewachen, Gangtey Lodge, Amankora). Some basic guesthouses and farmhouse stays also available. Book ahead in crane season.
Weather
High altitude means cold temperatures, especially October-March. Frost and occasional snow in winter. Summer is pleasant but misty. Crane season coincides with cold weather—bring warm layers.
