Lhuentse

The sacred valley of royalty, master weavers, and untouched traditions

Altitude: 1,460m (4,790ft) Best Time: March-May, September-November Suggested: 2-3 days

Overview

Lhuentse holds a special place in Bhutanese history as the ancestral home of the Wangchuck dynasty that has ruled Bhutan since 1907. This remote district in northeastern Bhutan remains one of the least visited regions, preserving traditions and a pace of life that has changed little over centuries. The district is renowned throughout Bhutan for its master weavers, particularly in Khoma village, where women create the intricate kushuthara brocade textiles that can take months to complete and are among Bhutan's most prized possessions. The landscape is dramatic—the powerful Kuri Chhu river carves through steep valleys, and ancient monasteries cling to impossible cliff faces. For those willing to make the journey, Lhuentse offers an unparalleled glimpse into authentic Bhutan.
